Kampala, Uganda – The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) limited in an impressive feat, has accomplished the construction of 177 resettlement houses for the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) in Uganda.
This according to informed sources marks a significant milestone in the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) implementation.
These replacement houses span across various districts, including Kikuube, Kakumiro, Kyankwanzi, Sembabule, Rakai, Kyotera, and Lwengo, ensuring the well-being and livelihood restoration of the affected communities.
The momentous handover ceremony, early this month, was graced by Mr. Birungi Abubakah, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Mubende District, who commended EACOP Ltd. for their unwavering commitment and support in taking care of the Project Affected Persons.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. John Bosco Habumugisha, the Deputy Managing Director of EACOP Ltd., expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Mubende, including local government officials and community members, for wholeheartedly embracing the project.
Despite facing initial criticisms, Mr. Habumugisha acknowledged the positive impact of the project, with the local community becoming strong advocates in spreading awareness about its benefits.
Mr. Habumugisha reaffirmed EACOP’s dedication to restoring and improving the lives of the Project Affected Persons. The company provides transitional support, including food baskets and relocation assistance, to ensure a smooth transition.
Psycho-social support is also extended to vulnerable individuals and those adjusting to new environments. In an effort to empower the PAPs, EACOP has implemented innovative livelihood restoration programs, enhancing their income-earning capacity and overall quality of life.
Notably, EACOP prioritized national content by engaging Ugandan-owned construction companies, such as Technical Masters Ltd, Egis Engineering Contractors, Excel Construction, and Epsilon, for the construction of all 177 houses. These selections were based on their proximity to the pipeline, utilizing local expertise to ensure top-notch quality.
To ensure the highest standards of quality assurance and control, EACOP enlisted the services of KATT Consult Ltd and Bureau Veritas Uganda Ltd as supervision contractors.
Out of a total of 3,648 Project Affected Persons in Uganda, only 203 individuals experienced physical displacement, with the majority of 177 PAPs choosing replacement housing as their preferred option.
EACOP is committed to ongoing engagement with the project-affected communities, valuing their feedback to shape the planning and implementation of resettlement activities. This collaborative effort ensures empowerment and a brighter future for all stakeholders involved.
As EACOP celebrates this significant accomplishment, its dedication to improving the lives of Project Affected Persons remains at the forefront of its mission.
