Kampala, Uganda – The Science, Technology and Innovation (STI), Pathogen Economy Bureau reached a significant milestone this week when it organized a one-day seminar to standardize natural products under the therapeutics value chain.
Hosted at the STI offices in Naguru, Katalima Road, on Tuesday this week, the seminar was launched by the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Hon. Dr. Monica Musenero Masanza.
Pathogen Economy: Unlocking Africa’s Potential
The Pathogen Economy is an innovative approach that harnesses the therapeutic value of natural products to drive economic growth and health advancements in African countries like Uganda.
By integrating various platforms like Phyto-chemistry, In-vitro, Central Animal Lab Facility, and Clinical Trials on Natural Products (CONAT), the STI aims to create a robust system for standardizing natural therapeutics in Uganda.

According the head of the pathogen economy at STI, Ms Brenda Nakazibwe, the seminar which draw practitioners in health products production, aimed to apprise scientists of the STI platforms’ capabilities in standardizing therapeutics from natural products.
“By fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration, we sought to empower scientists in their research endeavors,” she told ResearchFinds News this morning.
She added that the standardizing team at STI received insights into the natural products lined up for testing.
“This knowledge will be crucial in driving the development of safe and effective therapeutics,” she added.
In her presentation, the Dr. Monica Musenero asked the participants to work together to create a testing schedule for different natural products. She said a well-planned schedule will streamline the process and ensure efficient testing and validation.
She told them the seminar was called to help facilitate networking among the heads of various platforms and other scientists adding that collaboration and expert reviews are vital in ensuring the success of the Pathogen Economy’s initiatives.
Global Impact of the Pathogen Economy
The Pathogen Economy holds immense potential for Africa, especially countries like Uganda. By capitalizing on the rich biodiversity of the continent, natural products can be developed into innovative therapeutics, providing cost-effective solutions to prevalent health challenges.
Furthermore, such advancements can open doors for Africa to become a key player in the global pharmaceutical market, contributing significantly to the economy.
As the Pathogen Economy progresses, it will pave the way for sustainable development, improved healthcare access, and economic growth across the continent. By embracing this unique approach, Africa can harness its natural resources to address its healthcare needs and make significant contributions to global health.
With the successful launch of the seminar and ongoing efforts to standardize natural products, Uganda and other African countries are poised to become leaders in the emerging Pathogen Economy, revolutionizing the healthcare landscape and transforming lives for the better.
I’m one of the scientists, called by the STI-OP, to attend the seminar.
Thank you STI-OP for recognizing me.
I’m really grateful.
