Kampala, August 3, 2023 – A collaborative effort between Uganda’s Ministry of Health and Amref Health Africa is fostering significant advancements in the country’s healthcare landscape.
The Minister for Health, Dr. Aceng Jane Ruth Ocero, hosted a delegation from Amref led by Group Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Gitahi Githinji, at the Ministry of Health headquarters.
This pivotal meeting aimed to shed light on the array of projects and initiatives currently undertaken by Amref, emphasizing their impact on local communities.
As Uganda continues to navigate the complexities of healthcare provision, this strategic partnership between the Ministry of Health and Amref has emerged as a cornerstone of progress.
Dr. Aceng expressed her gratitude for Amref’s steadfast commitment, which has endured even during challenging times, such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Highlighting the depth of the partnership, she underscored that the Ministry of Health and Amref share a long-standing collaboration.
Dr. Githinji provided an overview of Amref’s multifaceted support to the health sector. The organization is engaged in a spectrum of areas, including health security, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Reproductive and Maternal Health, and the implementation of community health strategies.
This holistic approach underlines Amref’s dedication to addressing the various dimensions of healthcare challenges in Uganda.
Dr. Patrick Kagurusi, the Country Director of Amref Uganda, outlined the organization’s presence in multiple regions, including Acholi, West Nile, Kalangala, Eastern, and South Western areas.
Among their endeavors, they’ve focused on supply chain strengthening, health workforce development, and improving Primary Health Care services, especially among refugee populations in places like Rhino Camp.
A recent initiative in the Busoga region demonstrates Amref’s commitment to tackling pressing social issues.
By installing solar-powered water systems, Amref seeks to curb high rates of teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence.
Dr. Kagurusi explained, “Our goal is to reduce the time spent by women and children collecting water, allowing them to focus on education and other opportunities.”
The support for the rollout of the Community Health Strategy was emphasized by Faith Mirimo, a technical assistant aiding the Department of Community Health. Amref has been instrumental in disseminating the strategy and providing orientation to 17 Regional Referral Hospitals.
Moreover, their efforts extend to operationalizing the registration of community health workers, with over 1,700 registered in the Fort Portal and Buyangabu districts.
This initiative is slated for expansion to cover 21 districts. Additionally, Amref is lending its expertise to the development of financing guidelines for the Community Health Strategy.
Founded in 1957, Amref Health Africa, a Non-Governmental Organization headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, has been collaborating with Ugandan communities to enhance health since the mid-1980s.
The establishment of their Kampala office in 1987 solidified their commitment to the nation’s well-being. With a shared vision for a healthier Uganda, the partnership between the Ministry of Health and Amref holds the promise of a more resilient and accessible healthcare system for all Ugandans.
