On behalf of the National Unity Platform Diaspora, we extend our condolences to the family of veteran journalist Ndugu Shaka Ssali, who passed away today in Washington, D.C.
Shaka was not just a journalist; he was a beacon of truth and integrity in African media, most notably as the host of the popular program “Straight Talk Africa.” His commitment to candor and accountability resonated with audiences and inspired countless individuals to engage in the vital discourse of our times.
Shaka Ssali’s legacy is a testament to the vital role journalists play in society. He understood that journalism is not merely a profession; it is a responsibility to the public, a duty to question, and a commitment to truth-telling, even in the face of adversity. His voice was powerful, and he used it to speak truth to power, holding leaders accountable and providing a platform for the marginalized.
However, we must also reflect on the harsh realities that have impacted journalists under the current regime. The NRM government has consistently sought to undermine the legacy and integrity of journalists like Shaka.
In a blatant attempt to silence Shaka’s powerful voice, NRM demanded that he withdraws as moderator from the 2016 Presidential debate in Uganda. When he refused, they resorted to coercive tactics, forcing the Inter-Religious Council to sign a memo stipulating that Shaka would not pose any questions to Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during the debate—a clear violation of journalistic freedom and integrity.
Today, as we mourn the loss of this media giant, we cannot ignore the present moment. The same regime that sought to muzzle Shaka Ssali is now perpetrating violence against journalists. The recent events during the Kawempe North By-election, where journalists were tortured, arrested, and beaten, underscore the urgent need to advocate for the rights and freedoms of the fourth estate.
As we honor Shaka’s life and legacy, let us also commit ourselves to the fight for press freedom and the protection of journalists in Uganda and beyond. We must raise our voices against the systemic repression that threatens the very fabric of democracy. The value of journalists cannot be overstated—they are the guardians of truth, the watchdogs of power, and the champions of justice.
In this time of sorrow, let us honor Shaka Ssali not just by remembering his contributions but by standing resolutely for the rights and liberties of all journalists. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family and loved ones find comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
